Pidgin is probably one of the best all-around chat clients that I’ve used because of its flexibility to connect with many different chat platforms. Here’s how to connect to your Facebook chat through Pidgin:
- Open Pidgin and select Manage Accounts from the Accounts menu (or press Ctrl+A),
- Press the Add… button to open the Add Account screen,
- Select the XMPP protocol from the drop down list
Enter the Domain and Resource as shown here. Enter your Facebook Username and Password,
- Click on the Advanced tab,
Uncheck the Require SSL/TLS checkbox.
- Click Add
That’s all there is to it.
UPDATE: The very next day after I wrote this, Facebook no longer accepts these settings. You must use the Facebook Pidgin plugin found here: http://code.google.com/p/pidgin-facebookchat/
