Facebook XMPP Settings for Pidgin

Pidgin is probably one of the best all-around chat clients that I’ve used because of its flexibility to connect with many different chat platforms. Here’s how to connect to your Facebook chat through Pidgin:

  1. Open Pidgin and select Manage Accounts from the Accounts menu (or press Ctrl+A),
  2. Press the Add… button to open the Add Account screen,
  3. Select the XMPP protocol from the drop down list
  4. Add Account - Basic Settings for Facebook
Enter the Domain and Resource as shown here. Enter your Facebook Username and Password,
  5. Click on the Advanced tab,
  6. Add Account - Advanced Settings for Facebook
    Uncheck the Require SSL/TLS checkbox.
  7. Click Add

That’s all there is to it.

UPDATE: The very next day after I wrote this, Facebook no longer accepts these settings. You must use the Facebook Pidgin plugin found here: http://code.google.com/p/pidgin-facebookchat/
